The Upper Room is one of a number of local churches working together to  set up and establish an emergency Foodbank in Middleton.

The foodbank will be located in the Warwick Mill based Lighthouse Project operated by Inspire Middleton, and will operate under the name of Middleton Central Foodbank and be part of the Trussell Trust national network of  foodbanks.

Members of several local churches have been working together for some time to get this project off the ground, and since space has become available at the Lighthouse Project the group is moving forwards to get the service open as soon as possible.

Trussell Trust foodbanks gave emergency food to 346,992 people nationwide in 2012-13, including 126,889 children. Rising food and fuel prices combined with static incomes mean more people are hitting a crisis where they can’t afford food.

We need your help to stop people going hungry in the UK which is why we will be asking you and your friends and family to help.

In this set up phase there are a number of ways that you can help or get involved.
The Foodbank is currently looking for:

  • Good quality wooden pallets Foodbanks so that we can store food off the floor.
  • Medium or heavy duty shelves for stacking food and tin cans.
  • A good set of weighing scales
  • Some wheeled cages for transporting food into the Lighthouse.

Foodbanks are largely run by teams of volunteers who receive and collect donations of food that are then distributed to local people who find themselves in crisis. The service is not a free-for-all but is structured to make sure that any food goes to a deserving person or family.

We are currently identifying the times that the foodbank will open and these will be published shortly along with our target opening date. There will be a website for the foodbank and this too is currently being put together.

In the meantime there is much to be done behind the scenes and we are now taking donations of food to stock the warehouse. If you want to get involved then please contact us via phone on 0161 643 1163 (temporary number) or by email to info@middletoncentral.foodbank.org.uk and we will be in touch.
